A friend of Kokorosa visited Tanna Island, Vanuatu, in December 2017. Purpose was to add additional participants to the National Oral Health Survey at Lenekal. A room was set up at Loukatai Primary School near Lenekal township which is on a main road. Trainees from the Aneityum Project, Nelson and Malone came to show support by providing cleaning and extractions…. Tanna has 35,000 people with no oral health service and their needs are vast.
When the Loukatai community saw what the Aneityumese could do so well, they had a Storian (big meeting) to learn if the Tannese community could also have what Aneityum has achieved.
They are now in the process of concreting the floor of their Earthship house to turn this into a community dental clinic. The Earthship house has been built with old tires and compacted earth by the Fruit of the Pacific Trust to be a safe house during cyclones and they wish for it to have a community purpose. They have nominated their health workers who wish to learn oral health treatments and are busy organising a power and water source.
Water will have to be carefully chosen as this community has excess fluoride like many other islands in Vanuatu due to ground rock sources and VOG (volcanic fog) from Mt Yasur – tests at Loukatai revealed fluoride levels over 3ppm which has been reported to authorities…
