Baby Damien is from Ujmech village on Aneityum Island and was born with a unilateral cleft lip. His family have just celebrated his first birthday. In April this year he will travel with his Mamma Roselyn to Port Vila to have his lip mended, organised through Interplast at Port Vila Central Hospital so he will look, speak, eat and drink like other children. It will take two plane rides to reach Port Vila as Aneityum Island is the most Southern in the archipelago. This will cost approximately NZD400. Surgery is provided for free.
DAMIEN AND HIS MAMMAS AIRFARES HAVE NOW BEEN FUNDED!!!
April 2018 update: Damien was assessed and treated by the Interplast team at Port Vila Central Hospital alongside Ni-Vanuatu surgeon Dr Samuel. Damien returned to his island all mended – wow – life changing… many thanks to the three little boys from Queensland, Australia, who used all their pocket money to buy seats on a plane for Damien and his Mamma to get to Port Vila Central Hospital. This Mamma was able to be with other families who have cleft babies and is now part of the new support group “Neja tok blong ol pikinini”.
